"What?"
"I'm only a sixth year. How could you have forgotten that? You only finished school three years ago, it's not like you're some bigshot now. You remember Hogwarts, right? Buncha weird kids in black robes? Your adorable little sister running around-"
"Querido, okay."
Katherine watched her brother across the kitchen as he chopped onions for a nameless meal. She didn't understand how he could eat regular food in the morning. She returned her attention to the parchment in front of her and nibbled at the contents of a bowl of cherries on the kitchen island. She was expected to bring formal robes for a ball this year, and she had already spent her allowance on a new broomstick.
"Joao, d'you think I could make first string this year?" she asked, feigning nervousness. She even twirled a lock of her hair for good measure. Her brother glared at her.
"Very funny."
She laughed even though he didn't. "Yeah, I hope we get some first years I can train as babies. The new broomstick models are absolutely choice, just mint, and I bet they make them in small sizes for pint-size players. Remember how I used to ride dad's old-"
She looked up to an empty kitchen. Joao had left his onions simmering in a pan of hot oil for their housekeeper to take care of. He certainly didn't expect KP to do anything, that was for sure. She shrugged, annoyed that he had walked away in the middle of her playful memory.
Walking out onto the terrace with her cherries, KP felt the ruby juice drip down her white throat. She rubbed it away gingerly, spitting the pit off the side of the railing and not bothering to watch it fall onto the streets. The sky was grey, as usual. She considered writing a letter to one of her classmates, asking if she was interested in rooming with her, but the effort needed sounded exhausting.
She sighed, picking at her fingernails. "I can wait to talk to everyone for another few days. August isn't even over yet..."
