"My name is Shivani Pandita Anantas. All are Hindi names in origin, thanks to my father who is from India originally. Shivani means life and death, Pandita means scholar, Anantas means infinite. "I was in Ravenclaw when I attended Hogwarts, like the rest of my family (on my mother’s side). There wasn’t much of a question as to what house I would be sorted into, the hat placed me in Ravenclaw almost before it touched my head. Now I have come back to work as the Divination Professor and act as Head of Ravenclaw. As for my wand it is seven inches and made from Pine with a core of Augury tail feather and is a rather springy wand."

"We’re close now are we? I would not say that, but I will tell you about myself none-the-less. I have always been a little different; I did not make many friends in school, but it never really bothered me. What is it that is different about me? I’m not entirely certain. I am not shy, but I am quiet; I do not often speak unless spoken to first, but that does not mean I am unwilling to speak and I have been known to have many fine conversations with young and old alike, I simply do not initiate them. I am an observer, I miss little and see fine details most would not catch unless specifically looking.

I feel, I assure you, I have emotions like anyone else, but I guess it doesn’t much seem like I do. I notice it puts people off around me and find it intriguing. I smile more often than not for I do not see the point of going through life frowning, and a smile at the ‘wrong’ time can put people off even more, it seems. My smile leaves when I am angered, though such occasions are rare, and I am told there is something that changes in my eyes that makes people nervous, something cold and almost malicious that almost feels like I’m seeing into your soul some have said, though such a description has served only to make me laugh. I don’t feel I have a malicious bone in my body, nor a malicious eye for that matter.

I am very open and accepting. There are those who think of divination as a folly and I will not try to change their mind; people will believe or not believe whatever they wish to and it no business of mine to dictate what those things should be. However, I believe I also deserve the same respect from them and will not abide ridicule from non-believers. Students who will take my class thinking it will be an easy class period will be in for a surprise. I take divination seriously and I will expect my students to do the same in my class. That isn’t to say fun cannot be had for certainly divination can be great fun, but disrespectful joking about will not be tolerated.

I highly enjoy music and dancing and have been told I have a pretty voice. I thought, very briefly when I was much younger, about becoming a performer after Hogwarts, but it wasn’t my true passion. I have been good at divination most of my life, have always enjoyed the subject, which made sense after I was found to be a Seer. I’m particularly good at palm reading. My mother always used to say it was due to my gypsy blood. No matter where the skill comes from I rather enjoy doing it and will generally read someone’s palm if asked nicely, though I may not share everything I find there.

I’ve also had a love for animals since I was very young. Our family has always had numerous types of pets, both magical and non, and my father is a magizoologist, along with my brothers. I could not imagine my life without animals in it every day. Animals are also important to notice for the signs they bring with them and so even though I did not follow my father and brothers passions into working with animals they still hold a high importance in my life and my work."

“A topic…? More, a person. My grandmother is the most influential person in my life and we are very close. She is my grandmother, my friend, my mentor, and more. She is growing old, which she reminds me on occasion much to my dismay. I do not need to be reminded, I can’t imagine what I’ll do when she’s gone…. I have Somber, her Augurey, well my Augurey since she gave her to me, and that’s some small comfort that I’ll have, sort of, a piece of her with me wherever I go."


SO, WHAT ABOUT FAMILY? WHERE DO YOU COME FROM? WHAT IS YOUR HISTORY AND DO YOU HAVE BROTHERS, SISTERS, AUNTS AND UNCLES?

"My father is Akshay Anantas. He met my mother, Syria, when he was in England to study Welsh Green and Hebridean Black dragons. I’ve been told the two ‘courted’ (such an old fashioned notion) for three years before he proposed. My father’s parents wished for him to bring his new bride back to India, but my mother did not want to leave England and her family and my father agreed to stay instead. This apparently angered my father’s family for some reason and they have not spoken to him or any of us since. Because he’d sacrificed his family and his home for her, my mother agreed to name us, their children, with Hindi names he came up with; a small piece of his home that she could give him.

I was first born and only daughter. Then came my brothers, four of them: Jayesh, the first and the oldest; Anik, brave and very much an over-achiever, always competing with Jayesh; Vanadev, whose passion for animals began nearly the day he was born and is growing to surpass that of all his brothers and even father; and Amalesh, gentle, kind, and naïve. Jayesh is two years younger than me and Anik three. While Jayesh is content to work alongside father Anik has struck out on his own and none of us have even heard from him in months. Vanadev is seven years my junior and has been working with father and Jayesh since he graduated Hogwarts. Amalesh will be a 7th year at Hogwarts this year, in Ravenclaw of course as all of us have been.

Growing up I was saddled with more responsibility than most of my siblings, including helping my mother look after my little brothers, but it wasn’t that bad as we also had my mom’s family around to help too. Having such a large extended family on my mother’s side sort of made up for not seeing my father’s family ever. My grandmother and I are very close, I’ve always found her to be such an interesting person. She is a Seer and the first to recognize me as one, and then became my mentor. She went to Hogwarts during the war and told me stories of those days sometimes, almost as a special treat. She was a wonderful storyteller, hearing her tell it would almost make it seem like you were there. I still ask her for advice from time to time.

My grandmother had a wand made for me using a feather from her Augurey before my first year. After I was recognized as a Seer in my third year she gave me that Augurey, a female named Somber. I take that bird everywhere with me, and took her everywhere the professors would permit me to take her in school, which was few enough places. Most told me she belonged with the Owls but I kept her in my room instead. I’m a peaceable sort but I would have fought to keep Somber with me. Other than that my time at Hogwarts was fairly uneventful.

After graduation I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. I worked on and off with my father and, after they graduated, my brothers, but it didn’t seem like something I really wanted to spend my life doing. In between working with my family I spent time with my grandmother, seeking her council, if you will, and learning everything I could from her. Finally this summer I began having dreams of Hogwarts, more specifically of the Divination classroom, and of Ravenclaw tower. They were recurring, every night, and I told my grandmother about them. She informed me that I would return to Hogwarts, that she had passed on her knowledge to me not so I would be selfish and keep it as my own. It was the day after she told me this that I was contacted and asked if I might interview for the position of Divination Professor, since I was a known Seer and we seem to be exceedingly hard to find. I of course accepted and was soon contacted again saying they would be please to have me.”
