"Okay. This time I'll do it. I'll turn this stick into a knife!" Kaya gave herself a quick prep talk and then drew her wand and pointed it at the small twig she had brought with her to the room. The wood sparked and then emitted a cloud of smoke and the tall blond sighed.
"Great." She let her wand hand fall toward the floor and then a resounding bang sent her toward the ceiling. She yelped and crashed back to the floor, landing in a sprawl on her back. She winced in pain and forced herself to sit up. Her long bony limbs creaked a little and she checked herself over for any real injuries. Not finding any she looked up and noticed that several of her housemates were staring at her.
"Eh... hehe? Sorry guys. Just... a little accident. It's all good. Really! Sorry for interrupting your studies." Please stop staring at me like I'm a freak. I already know I'm different. She didn't let anyone see how unnerved she was though, and soon it seemed that everyone had returned to their homework. She shifted the grip on her wand and tried again, producing a cloud of sparks, but no change in the wood. With a sigh and a frown she checked her book again, leaning over because there was quite a ways between her 6'7" frame and the top of the nearest table, which barely reached her waist.
"Okay... so it's... a swish and jab motion...?" She hesitantly tried the motion, pointing her wand away from people and flammable objects, at a section of bare stone on the wall. Another loud explosion tore the silence and a few slivers of rock went flying. Although there wasn't much of a dent in the wall, it looked quite scorched.
"Sorry!" She squeaked the word out, not even looking. Of course everyone was staring at her. She did her best to ignore them and turned back to the twig, taking a deep breath. She whispered the spell as she did the motion this time and the twig jumped several feet in the air before becoming silver and shiny. It wasn't quite a knife, but it was better than before. She smiled weakly, proud of herself. Then the metal twig shot off like a bullet and nearly took someones nose off. The lucky person apparently didn't notice since they just rubbed their nose and went back to reading their book. The twig was embedded securely in the wall, and back to being wood again.
"... Great." She sighed. Why couldn't she do this right?
