Kaya scampered up the steps to the owlery, in one of her usual good moods. She halfway tripped on a few of the steps, either catching herself before she truly fell or banging one of her bony shins painfully. Neither one bothered her. Classes were starting again, new foals had been born to the thestral herd in the forest, and she was just delightfully happy all around and ready to spend some time with Poe before she sent a letter to her family. She finally managed to reach the top of the long staircase and opened the door. Several owls hooted and screeched softly, and a rather strong wave of smell hit her. She took a second to compose herself before walking in.
Poe was sleeping near the top. The almost black Great Gray Owl had his head flipped backwards, his crown resting between loosely fluffed wings. She smiled up at him and then called him down with a soft cooing noise, much like thestrals made when they were perfectly happy. The large owls head snapped up and he looked around before spotting her. Wings spread he stepped off the perch, gliding down to her without even disturbing the air. She smiled at him as he landed on her arm. His talons hurt a little as they dug into the skin, but she was used to that sort of mild pain.
"Hello Poe. How are you? Is it boring up here in the Owlery or do you go and hunt things in the forest?" The bird sidled up her arm carefully until he could gently beak her ear and 'preen' her hair. He never touched any part of it that was dyed though, sticking to the pale silvery blond strands that were currently the dominant color. She hadn't bothered with dye recently, so all of it was fading. She needed to wash the blue coloring out of the tips, they were looking more green than blue by now.
She reached over with her free hand and returned the favor of the grooming. Her fingers moved through the feathers easily, not disturbing their layout, but gently tugging out old feathers that were already mostly replaced. She also checked his feet while he was busy with her hair. The last time she had checked on him his feet had developed some sort of fungal infection that had turned them rather scalier than usual. She'd gotten a potion and helped him every day at breakfast since then. They seemed fine now and she smiled, scratching just above his beak. He squinted his eyes happily as she did, enjoying the sensation apparently.
She continued to talk with him for a while, not really expecting any answers, but just wanting to have time with her friend. She only stopped when she heard someone else coming up the stairs. She didn't want to be known as the freak who talked to birds. She looked over to the door as Poe hopped down from her shoulder to a low perch, swiveling his head to watch the door as well.
