The world is comprised of different forms of energy. These forms can be physical, ethereal, or even spiritual.
In existence, there were three realms. Each realm existed as massive beings, existing in quiet harmony.
One was Physical
One Spiritual.
One Ethereal.
In ancient times, a war had erupted between the physical realm and the ethereal realm. The ethereal realm sought to take over the physical realm, and render the entire world as ethereal, therefore eliminating the physical realm, and having limitless power.
The battle raged, when finally, the Gods and Goddesses of these realms had subjected them both to a sort of celestial house arrest, causing both beasts to expand over the millennia, and, after they both perished, instead of returning to the neutral energies that created them, they began to spawn life within them, creating borders, governing the laws of time and space within them. Just as the Gods and Goddesses had determined, these raging beasts were reborn into two separate universes.
The world began, and ended with these energies.
Due to how volatile these energies were, the energy flow had to be distributed and flow evenly between the worlds, creating an infinite power cycle between each world, keeping the remains of the sacred beasts alive.
There was a celestial world and an infernal world created to link these two worlds together, reminiscent of Heaven or Hell, if you will. Waygates open up between said worlds and filter the energy through, thus rendering the inhabitants within powerless, and safe.
At least, until a particularly disgruntled God had gotten bored with the tranquility granted to these two new worlds, and decided to tamper with the Waygates, opening the world to the Hell.
Demons flooded the Earth.
The Spirit Realm, angered, waged war against the Gods because of the insolence of one. The world is promptly destroyed.
Two thousand years later, Earth is on the brink of destruction, and most of the population is none the wiser.
Two groups of warriors, the Hunters (made for Demon Hunting), and the Reapers (made for the ferrying of souls to the afterlife) which control the world, were established, with the purpose of keeping the world safe from the malfunctioning Waygates. In the year 2006, those boundaries were crossed, and now, the Earth is looking upon its imminent destruction.
Now, the fate of the world rests in the hands of few.
Here is the story of one individual who shaped this war, and caused the ending that had occurred.
Crossed and Waiting Session1 – The Incident
I stumbled into the halls of Poteau High School, exhausted from the sleepless nights I had recently experienced. Nothing could make the day worse, I thought to myself. Then, of course, here comes Roland. Roland Rodgers was the town rich boy, star Quarterback, basically the epitome of the jerk-offs that usually preyed on those who they called ‘peasants’, a nickname to make them feel smart, sneering and laughing their way into the lives of those who could provide them meal tickets or bring them a slice of bread with bologna on it. Seeing him on his approach, I decided I was too tired to deal with him, so I took immediate evasive action to the left…
No dice.
“Hey, dorkface!” Roland yelled. His buddies giggled behind him after he shouted his usual pointless insults. “Let’s see. You haven’t bought me lunch lately, right? Hook me up, buddy.”
“I don’t understand.” I said sarcastically, “Doesn’t Mommy and Daddy care enough about their prized lap dog to give you money?”
People around me gasped. No one usually smarted off to Roland without getting a free meal of fist-burger. But then again, the silver lining told me that if I got sucker-punched, I’d most likely wake up.
“What did you say to me, dorkface?”
“I said, get money from your parents, you worthless excuse for a jock.”
People began to crowd around us, watching us, two Seniors, stand toe to toe, in each other’s faces. People would probably sing songs about how I stood up for myself, and then got my head lobbed off by his fist. Skulls be rollin’.
“That’s it. You’re through!” Roland yelled as he readied his wind up. The thing about Roland is he was an attention monger, and usually over-animated himself in his fights. Now, it was known, he was strong, and one hell of a boxer, but there’s one thing he never looks at.
This day’s going downhill already, so…
Roland’s eyes then bulged. He never looks down.
I remembered three years ago, I spent some time with an old, lecherous japanese man that lived in the apartment behind my family’s. He was rather nice after I brought him a phone number from the waitress in the Corner Cafe downtown, and decided I was for some reason worthy of his training. Turns out the guy was one hell of a martial artist, and knew four types. All the way up until the day he passed away of old age, he trained me daily, teaching me self discipline, fighting techniques, and how to focus. He once told me that the greatest warriors know how to be themselves both on and off the battlefield, and would aspire to be great in all they did. He was a wise old man, even though I could never properly pronounce his name…
Roland, with his big stupid eyes looking down at his big stupid stomach, was in utter shock. In self defense, I had taken my fist and drove it into that big stupid stomach, knocking the wind out of him. As he leaned forward, I glared at him.
“I’m sure I speak for everyone here when I say fuck off.” He fell to his knees at that point. The hall was quiet. Then I remembered something that made my spine tingle.
Of course. His Mom’s the Principal…
So, later, I would find myself in Mrs. Rodger’s office. This is why people never retaliated…
“So. Causing fights.” She said, writing down a report. “Not only causing fights, but attacking without provocation. You sir, are on the fast track to expulsion-“
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Rodgers, but need I remind you how many times me and several other people have come to you, telling you your son steals from us daily? Or how about beats up everyone that tries to have fun in his hallway? How about the times we’ve come to you telling you he’s threatened us?” I suddenly just started spilling my guts. I don’t know what came over me, but I felt the exact same way as I did when I straight punched that fat ass in the gut… and I liked it.
Mrs. Rodgers was rather appalled. “You dare speak to me about my son that way?”
“Yes I dare, and I dare tell you that I have enough common sense to recognize when favoritism is placed in front of your duties as Principal. You’re the damn Principal? You’re a joke!” I was appalled at my own outburst. The door was open. Teachers and students alike were peering into the office, shocked, some grinning at me as I had unloaded.
I turned on my heel.
“Where do you think you’re going, you little cretin?!” the Principal screamed.
“I don’t know.” I calmly said. “But what I do know is if a school like this spawns little idiots like your son, I’ll take my chances somewhere else.” Then I left.
Things couldn’t have been worse. Why did I lash out at her? I just left my High School…
It began raining, icy drops dripping on my shoulders. Things couldn’t have been worse… then I heard it.
Kiiiiiiiiiiiite… “What…?” I spun around, and saw a black mass standing in front of me. “Who are you?!” I shouted, not in fear, but in anger. Surprisingly, I took a step towards this thing. What the hell is wrong with me?
Kiiiiiiiiiiiite… it rasped again. When my eyes adjusted, I cried out in disgust and shock. The thing lurched forward, it’s arms… were those arms? The “arms” flopped on the ground with a sickening plop as it made its way to me, spikes and teeth bulging from an eyeless face.
I ran my ass off, tearing down the street back towards the school. They sky grew dark, and began turning red. Fear seemed to line my nerves, triggering the flight notion in my brain. I was running so fast I had just noticed a clawed arm barely missing me, bursting through a window in a nearby house. The school was in view, which was great, but I realized what the hell am I going to do? This is a school! Hardly the Army Reserve…
I burst in through the doors, in time to slip on something wet and slimy. A sharp yelp and growling told me I just stepped on one of the creatures. Or a small dog. Thankfully, my spill caused me to avoid something sharp looking swinging above me. A sword…? I got back up and ran to the Janitor’s closet. I had to get to higher ground… where is everyone?!
I arrived on the roof and looked out towards the town. It was a one story school, and I couldn’t see far, but I could see enough. Damn…
Fires had broken all over the place, and I could see the creatures running loose, chasing people, several screaming… my name? My name? MY NAME?! Just then, a whistle pierced the deafening roar of chaos, and I turned in time to see a man in a cloak behind me, a sword pointed at me.
The sword, a single edged weapon, probably four feet in length, was inches from my face.
“So… you are him.” The man said cooly.
“Yeah… Him. I’m usually referred to in that way.” I replied.
“No need for the smart tongue. I can recognize you even if you didn’t open your mouth, Kite the Nightslayer.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Yeah, but that was more of a… ‘I’m confused’ what, not a ‘didn’t hear you’ what.”
The man chuckled. “I knew you’d say that.” He dropped the sword at my feet. “Now prepare to fight.”
I looked down to the sword as if it were a bomb. “Fight?!” I exclaimed in horror. “Wait, wait WAIT, I’m not fighting those things…”
“Who said you had to fight those things?” he said, pointing up, and then he vanished. I looked up, and my jaw dropped.
“Oh…” there were teeth as big as me.
“My…” it’s body was as large as the school.
“GOD.” A monster. A huge, absolutely hulking monster, was staring down at me. It’s mouth open as if it were about to swallow this town whole. I picked up the sword, not sure what to do. It’s body seemed suspended from a large rip in the sky.
Suddenly, the sword jerked, as if it had its own will, and a voice filled my head.
What are you doing just standing there?! Fight!!
The voice was a female voice. I looked around for the source of the voice, but it filled my head again.
WAKE UP!! she shouted. She then huffed like a teenager. Fine, let me!
It felt as though hands were running down from my shoulders to my hands, and someone was pressed against my back. Then, I went blissfully blank. Suddenly, I felt as if I was flying through the air, and when I opened my eyes, I was flying through the air. I tried to scream, but couldn’t. It was as though whatever entity had shouted at me… had taken control of me? This didn’t make sense. It didn’t. It DIDN’T.
Finally, after some movement, I landed, skidding to a halt, and I turned, grinning. Grinning? Suddenly, her voice came out of my mouth.
Not bad. Your limitations may need to be pushed, but, I do believe you are worthy to hold me…
“What are you talking about?” I heard myself say to her, barely conscious.
You’ll see when you grow up, boy. She mused, a smile evident in her voice. I soon passed out, seeing the monster bursting into flames before being sucked back into the hole in the sky.
