Though regarding the Animagus--the reason that no one does it in the books is that you don't choose the animal you turn into, you just sort of get shafted into one. And since it takes years of effort, most people don't want to take the gamble that their inner character is actually that of a trout or a wombat, because that's not nearly as cool as, say, a wolf, or a platypus, or a tiger.

I would imagine that someone studying to become one would be aware of such a fact.
