During this time, he encountered and assisted many wizards and witches from the Ministry in capturing Dark Wizards. MIT soon became an organization that tied directly with the Ministry of Magic's Magical Law Enforcement Department. Whenever they would have Dark Wizards directly influencing the Muggle world, they turned to MIT and asked for their assistance. Between both groups, magic was not only kept secret, but also kept under control. Marcus became good friends with several top Wizards at the time, including Nicholas Flamel and Albus Dumbledore. In fact, Nicholas Flamel once gave Marcus a vial of elixir, which would extend his life. At the time, Marcus accepted the offer, but had no intentions of taking the elixir, as his life seemed pretty full and he was still rather young.
Marcus spent the next fifteen years as the Head of MIT before finally retiring from it and the military. He then spent a few years travelling abroad, meeting with all of his old contacts he had made in both the magical and muggle world. He met with men who were masters with numbers and renewed his love for Arithmancy, studying it even further than he had at Hogwarts. During this time, he kept up to date on Voldemort's actions and tyranny, even assisting a few friends and old collegues in stopping some of Voldemort's plans, but never really doing much against him.
Around 1989, Marcus had met and married a woman named Shana. The two made a great life for themselves and had a wonderful house in the country. Marcus had, for the most part, kept himself away from the magical world. There had been a peace since Voldemort's fall, and despite some wizards trying to stir up trouble, it had been very quiet in that realm.
However, in 1991, MIT received word of an ancient wizard resurfacing and comissioned Marcus to return for another mission. Herpo the Foul was his name and he was one of the darkest wizards ever known. According to legends, he successfully created a Horcrux, and it was believed that this was unsurfaced and activated accidentally during an excavation.
As such, Marcus agreed and worked with Aurors and most of MIT's current top men to find that conventional(Meaning magical) means of dealing with Herpo the Foul would not work. Spells seemed to reflect off him with ease. All that Marcus could think of were silver bullets created by goblins that he had been given a few years prior to this and he decided that if Magical methods wouldn't work, then Muggle methods would have to(Or as Muggle goblin bullets can be).
Marcus snuck through Herpo's defenses and reached the Dark Wizard as his body finished forming. The wizard joked at Marcus facing him with a gun, asking if he was the best the world could offer. Marcus replied that he just did the best he could and shot Herpo in the head, chest, and also hit the necklace he was wearing. The necklace shattered and a scream was heard as the body went lifeless and something silvery faded into nothingness. He found out afterward that the bullets had been coated in a small amount of basilisk venom, which is why they had been so effective.
After this incident, he was knighted, and Marcus truly retired, politely declining any request for help from MIT. He stayed hidden in the shadows when Voldemort returned to power, keeping him and his wife safe from harm. After the second fall of Voldemort, they came out of hiding and enjoyed life, having very few problems for years.
In 2010, Marcus, now 80, bought a boat and wanted him and Shana to go sailing around the world. This was partly due to the fact that he was informed he had a terminal illness that would take his life within three years. He did not tell Shana about this illness and he became very selfish soon after his diagnosis. He even tore up his study looking for the vial of elixir he kept all these years. He knew that its properties, especially after this long, would heal him.
It did more than that, though. It reverted him to his 30 year old self. This scared his wife, but once he explained everything, Shana understood, even though now it meant that he would outlive her. He apologised to her and told her that this way, at least, they could be together longer.
However, in 2012, while sailing home, the duo sailed into a storm and Shana fell overboard and drowned. Marcus was haunted by this for decades, as Shana hated the boat and only went along with him as a show of her love for her husband. More than once, Marcus considered suicide, but he never followed through.
He mostly went through the motions for the next 30 years. Living a very boring life, despite his renewed youth. He did travel abroad again, learning more about the magical world in these new days of wonderous technology. He also learned ways to use technology to help him master spells. He was finally able to use his powers to their fullest, even though he was over 100 at this point.
He found solace in his numbers once again and devoted himself to the work that kept his mind off everything else. After a few years, he was invited to teach Arithmancy at Hogwarts and he accepted, wanting to pass his experiences to children in hopes they, too, will enjoy the truth behind the numbers.
